Young local taekwondo athlete Cobby Rice is going to get a kick at nationals in May.
Rice, a 12-year-old who trains at Bowman’s Taekwondo Academy, made the Alberta team at provincials last weekend in Edmonton with a stellar first place gold medal performance in B black belt junior finweight.
“For two years in a row, Cobby’s been junior national champion but this is the actually his first year stepping into the B division, which is older kids,” instructor Sandy Bowman said.
“He’s a tiny, small child, but he’s usually at the top of his division in C against younger kids. Now he’s against older kids, and there’s full (head) contact now, so I was kind of worried about how he was going to react. But he did awesome, and that’s the best he’s ever done. Everything was right on the money, his timing and technique.
“It was just like playing a video game. I’d say something and he’d do exactly what I said.”
Rice finished third last year at the C junior nationals in Calgary but now he gets to take his taekwondo to Montreal in May for this year’s nationals. At this age, the sky is limit for Rice.
“It’s going to be good to go to Montreal,” Rice said. “”I’m going to be training pretty hard.”
“He’s 12 years old and he’s a second degree black belt,” Bowman said. “He’s got a bright future in taekwondo ahead of him.”
The club’s Andrew Nelson was in second place behind Rice.
The entire club did well at provincials this year. There were a total of 11 gold, seven silver and six bronze medals earned by the club’s athletes in the various belts and age groups.
It’s been a lot of time since 2002 when the entire Alberta provincial senior taekwondo team came from Bowman’s. That group gradually disbanded, but there is a good young group of taekwondo athletes ready to make their marks, and Bowman feels this tournament went very well for them.
“All these younger kids are coming up now, the junior black belts and the blue belts dominated in all divisions. They had no competition whatsoever,” he said.
Brayden Rice also won a gold in the junior lightweight purple belt competition, while Four other athletes also won gold, with Jamie Limbitko winning double gold. Yellow belt Devon Hiscock’s gold is particularly remarkable, considering she’s only five.
Even some of the athletes who didn’t get gold impressed Bowman. Dominic Hazard also had a very good tournament.
“He does good in class and he does good at everything else, but when he gets to the competition … he doesn’t follow the game plan and he find of follow in his own little ideas,” Bowman said.
“This time he did awesome. He lost his first match in a 5-5 overtime point, and he was really upset, but I went and talked to him afterwards and told him it was the best he’d ever done. It brought him up, He didn’t win, but he’s the one who showed that he could do well overall.”
The club will go to Western Canadian championships June 6 in Saskatoon, with a flock of about 20 athletes.
